QLD:Online sales just part of problem: Swan

Treasurer WAYNE SWAN says online international sales are just part of the problem for
Australia's retail sector.

Feeling the bite from the rise of online shopping, retailers have called on the federal
government to apply the goods and services tax and import duties on all goods bought overseas
online.

But the Productivity Commission report out today says while there are strong grounds
for lowering the tax-free threshold on online purchases from overseas, it does not recommend
scrapping it altogether

Mr SWAN says while the issue is complex, only a small portion of expenditure is going
into international internet sales.

WA:Engineer awarded $85,000 compensation

PERTH, April 8 AAP - An Indonesian aircraft engineer employed on a visa has been awarded
$85,000 in compensation after the Federal Court ruled his employer had breached work laws.

The case is believed to be the first of its kind where the court has found an employer
guilty of breaching the Fair Work Act and awarding $85,000 compensation for lost wages
including compensation for hurt and humiliation.

In April 2009 Djoko Puspitono was working in Perth for International Aviation Service
Assistance, which carries out aircraft maintenance for Garuda.

After complaining about not receiving overtime, the employer reviewed Mr Puspitono's
performance and sacked him.

He was reinstated after making an unfair dismissal claim but five months after, his
employer told Garuda his personality was unsatisfactory, which meant he lost his authorisation
to work on Garuda aircraft, and was sacked again.

Mr Puspitono's lawyer Giri Sivaraman said the Federal Court's decision sent a message
that workers had a right to raise concerns about their pay and entitlements without fear.

"Mr Puspitono was treated in a disgraceful way by his employer," he said.

"He lost his right to stay in Australia and has had to return to Indonesia.

"His health has suffered (and) his family suffered because they relied on his wages
for his children's education and housing costs in Indonesia."

Mr Sivaraman said the court decision had set several precedents including the fact
that the court could order employers to pay lost wages, compensation and damages for humiliation.

"It also highlights that making a negative assessment of an employee that adversely
affects the continuation of his employment is adverse action," he said.

The issue of costs, penalties and interest will be heard on April 12.

Vic: Romance a croak too far for urban frogs - study

By Mariza O'Keefe

MELBOURNE, Aug 20 AAP - Car traffic has been blamed for everything from polluting the
environment to road rage - well now it is being dubbed as a romance killer for urban frogs.

A Melbourne University study has found that the mating calls of male frogs in city
ponds are being drowned out by traffic noise and this is hindering these amphibian romeos'
chances of attracting and breeding with female frogs.

Ecologist Dr Kirsten Parris began her research with the university in 2000 and has
found frogs have disappeared from many of the 104 ponds included in the study and the
number of species in each pond has also reduced.

Its research has found that in some cases male frogs could once be heard by females
800 metres away and can now only be heard within 14 metres thanks to noise pollution.

Of particular concern is the threatened growling grass frog which has all but disappeared
from Melbourne's inner suburbs. Traffic noise is just one thing killing them off.

"The impact of noise comes on top of all these other effects, the other things that
frogs have to deal with in city environments. A lot of their habitat is lost ... (there's)
pollution, introduced predators ... so it's pretty tough for the little guys," Dr Parris
said.

She said female frogs chose their breeding partners based on their mating calls.

"Females generally like evidence of vigour and good health ... females like a guy who
is fit and healthy because he will give her better offspring," she said.

"Male frogs show they are fit and strong by calling fast and loudly and for a long time."

Dr Parris suggests that developers in the inner city should consider creating more
ponds and using barriers such as hedges or dense vegetation that would reduce noise but
still allow frogs to move from pond to pond.

And it is not just female frogs that would miss the baritones of mating male frogs
if they disappeared from the city, Dr Parris suggested.

"I think a lot of people like to hear frogs calling. It's a way to be in touch with
a little bit of nature in the city, where there is not much nature anymore."

Victorian women are travelling to Thailand to circumvent IVF sex-choice laws and pick
the sex of their babies.

The Herald Sun newspaper says trips costing up to 10-thousand dollars are being undertaken
by mothers desperate to choose the gender of their babies after the practice was overruled
by the Australian Health Ethics Committee in 2004.

Doctors face jail in Victoria for assisting with sex selections .. despite women asking
for assistance at clinics.

Thailand doesn't condone sex selection but several Thai clinics offer the service as

assistance in the last year and admits to directing them to look on the internet for information.

NSW: Govt spies to check for underage gamblers - report

SYDNEY, Aug 3 AAP - A team of young government spies will be dispatched across Sydney
to "test" whether pubs and clubs are checking IDs to stop underage gambling.

The NSW government has called for tenders from research firms to provide a group of
18- and 19-year-olds to be sent to pubs, clubs and Star City Casino in the next six months,
News Ltd reports.

Under the plan, the group will report the number of times they were asked for identification
while gambling across Sydney.

The team, expected to include as many as 15 young adults, will also be deployed to
TABs and bookmakers.

Gaming and Racing Minister Graham West said he was searching for young-looking adults
to lure pubs into ignoring required ID checks.

Any venue that did not ask for ID would become a target for departmental inspectors,
Mr West said.

"This is a test. If it comes back that no one is asking, the first thing we'll do is
send our inspectors in and start checking patrons' IDs to catch people doing the wrong
thing.

"These young adults will attempt to play gaming machines and casino tables games, place
bets with bookmakers and the TAB, play Keno and buy lottery tickets without being asked
for ID." The $150,000 research project is expected to begin within eight weeks.

"The research will cover as many venues in as many metropolitan and regional areas
as the budget allows," Mr West said. "ID checks are the first line of defence in preventing
minors gambling and potentially developing gambling problems."

The plan has drawn criticism from the opposition, which has accused the government of entrapment.

Opposition Leader Barry O'Farrell accused the government of using the project to distract
from a shortage of frontline police officers to enforce licensing laws.

"High visibility policing is the best deterrent to clubs and pubs which are not doing
the right thing," he said.

Native of Japan shares story of quake, culture

VALPARAISO — Rumi Mitsubayashi got a message in the wee hours of March 11 from a friend in Canada, urging her to check the Internet for news from her native Japan.

Mitsubayashi, the Japanese outreach director for Valparaiso University, found out an earthquake had rocked her homeland, but she couldn't find out where it had struck.

"I was calling my parents," she told about 20 people at the Valparaiso International Center Friday night, adding she was unable to get through.

As she learned more, she realized her area, the Shiga Prefecture, was not harmed.

"I'm from the middle part of Japan, and the middle part was actually OK," she said.

Mitsubayashi, who arrived in Valparaiso in August, shared images of destruction from the 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the devastating tsunami that followed.

She expressed gratitude from the outpouring of assistance from across the globe, and particularly the United States, since the disasters, which also have since come to include leaking radiation from a damaged nuclear plant.

"Many people are also trying hard to help the citizens — thank you very much. I appreciate that the United States government also is helping," she said.

Japan, which is about the same size as California but has a population of 127 million people, about half that of the U.S., has several earthquakes each year, so people expect them, Mitsubayashi said.

What they did not expect was an earthquake as large as the one that hit.

"After the earthquake, the government said, a tsunami is going to come, so all the citizens would know, but on their way to escape, the tsunami came," she said.

Planned power outages, allotting only three hours of electricity a day, make cooking and bathing difficult, particularly for large families, Mitsubayashi said.

She shared details about Japanese culture, including home styles and food, before leading visitors in the making of origami cranes. Cranes are the national bird and are a symbol of peace.

"For now, I can't do anything, but I want to do something for my country, as well as hoping that my country is getting better little by little, step by step," she said.

Venture capital returns hit the skids: ROI hits first negative numbers in a decade. (Finance).

There was a time when a venture investment in a tech company was, if not a sure bet, certainly a reasonable wager. Some returns were quick and high. But now, this once high-flying opportunity compares unfavorably with the biotech and medical segments.

In fact, 3-month and 1-year returns on a high-tech investment have fallen into negative numbers, mirroring the overall trend. Venture capitalists haven't seen negative numbers on their returns since the early '90s, according to New York-based research firm Venture Economics. But returns have been tumbling since late 1999 [see ELECTRONIC BUSINESS, April 2001, page 27] and really hit the skids the first half of 2001 when they became negative for two consecutive quarters. According to Venture Economics' performance index, the preliminary 1-year return for a venture capital fund was -18.2% at the end of Q2 2001.

That trend, says Mark Heesen, president of the National Venture Capital Association, Arlington, VA, was expected to continue through the end of 2001.

How should the investment market view these statistics? With a little perspective, Heesen advises. Prior to the recent negative numbers, VCs were seeing triple-digit positive returns. "The triple-digit [positive] returns were not realistic, and the negatives are not realistic," he says.

For the first time, Venture Economics is tracking ROI by industry segment. High-tech continues to be a positive investment, if you're willing to wait three to five years. In the short run, the new promise of the venture community appears to be the life sciences sector, particularly biotechnology, which showed the only positive return in the last 12 months.

Low market valuation trends, particularly in the Internet and technology sectors, have contributed to the negative returns. The decline in the Internet sector was not all that surprising to investors, Heesen notes, adding that sector was more like a land grab where VCs hoped to invest in that one dot-coin, out of the many, that would be successful.

Levels of investment, Heesen says, probably will remain lackluster. Some venture capitalists won't continue their investment in under-performing companies as long as they're uncertain when the IPO market will bounce back. The acquisition market isn't looking very positive either, he adds. VCs will hold on to those companies that they think, in the long run, will perform well.

"Liquidity is paramount to the industry and until the IPO market opens up again, it will be difficult to see positive short returns based on valuation trends," says Jesse Reyes, vice president of Venture Economics.

Squadron soon off

for Saudi Arabia,

Langley official says

After having its departure twice delayed, Langley Air Force Base's 27th Fighter Squadron is scheduled to leave June 12 for a 45-day deployment to Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, a Langley spokeswoman said Tuesday.

The departure of the 12-plane squadron of F-15C Eagles and about 220 support personnel was originally scheduled to begin April 4, then May 3. However, shortages of tanker planes to refuel the squadron's jets caused the deployment delays.

First Lt. Erin Bradley, a spokeswoman for the Langley-based 1st Fighter Wing, said the tankers were needed to support the ongoing NATO airstrikes in Yugoslavia. Over the past month, the United States has sharply increased the number of tankers overseas, helping to alleviate the shortages.

Air Force officials said the 27th Fighter Squadron will relieve a squadron of F-16s from Mountain Home Air Force Base in Idaho.

TuneIn Jockeys for Pole Position.

Byline: David E. Zoia, with Christie Schweinsberg

INTERNET RADIO LOOKS TO BE THE NEXT infotainment battleground inside the automobile, and Palo Alto, CA-based TuneIn is positioning itself for a bigger piece of the action.

The global Internet-radio aggregation service already is available on 2011 BMW and Mini models, in North America, and TuneIn says it also is talking about potential licensing deals with other OEMs.

To carve out a bigger piece of the auto industry's growing penchant for in-car entertainment, TuneIn will have to beat out similar service providers such as iHeartRadio for dashboard real estate and indirect competitors such as Sirius XM Satellite Radio and customized internet-based music service Pandora.

TuneIn, founded nine years ago in Dallas initially as a digital-recording service for radio (similar to what TiVo is to television) and now a part of RadioTime in Palo Alto, believes it has a step up on its rivals because of the breadth of its Internet-radio coverage and the growing popularity of its program guide app with smartphone and tablet users.

The developer says its software, which tracks the content of more than 50,000 radio stations in 140 countries, now is the most downloaded paid music app on iTunes. "It's super popular all around the globe," founder and CEO Bill Moore says. "We are going to have a launch in September and announce numbers, but it's in the tens of millions."

TuneIn works like a program guide for TV, allowing users to quickly view on their smartphone or tablet, such as an iPad, a list of broadcast radio stations in the area or find a station somewhere in the world currently playing a favorite artist, program or genre of music.

Users interested in listening to French-language broadcasts can call up a list of radio stations streaming programming from France, for example. TuneIn says it now offers radio content in 173 languages and functions in 23 languages, including Hindi, its newest addition.

Type in "Led Zeppelin," and a list of stations currently playing a song from the band will pop up. (For now, spelling counts, but Moore says TuneIn is working on software that will be more intuitive so users won't have to know how many P's are in Zeppelin.)

The directory can be sorted by region of the world and country and by type of programming, such as sports-talk radio or classic rock. It can locate a station with a specific on-air personality and, based on what the user is listening to, suggest other stations with similar content.

Because the service is global, an auto maker can adapt the technology once for use in vehicles sold worldwide.

In BMW's case, connections to Internet streaming of radio stations are made through the occupant's cell phone, but the application is controlled via the car's radio head unit and iDrive system.

BMW calls the feature either BMW Connected or Mini Connected depending on the marque, but TuneIn says in future contracts with the German auto maker and other car companies, it will insist on including the TuneIn brand, a sign of the company's growing confidence its name is gaining traction in the consumer-electronics market.

"As it gets more popular...(even) BMW is hearing this now: 'How do I get TuneIn in my car? It's my favorite application,'" Moore says.

A Mini spokeswoman says the take rate on the Mini Connected option, new this year, is running at about 18%. BMW says it is too soon to gage take rates on BMW Connected, available as a $250 option since March.

TuneIn's business model is still emerging. Its smartphone/tablet app is free, although a $0.99- upgrade allows users to pause streaming audio and record several hours of programming.

Moore is reluctant to detail too much about the privately held company's financial outlook ahead of an initial public offering that's eyed, saying only that TuneIn is operating at breakeven today from licensing fees, website display ads and app downloads.

But he sees the big play centered on a service allowing a radio station in one market to direct ads specifically to TuneIn users listening elsewhere.

"It's a big opportunity," Moore says. "Radio is a $40 billion business around the globe. Everybody listens. It's 17 hours a week in the U.S. per adult."

Because the TuneIn car application relies on cellular technology to connect with the Internet, users will have to make sure their data plans are robust enough or risk paying additional usage fees, though Moore contends a majority would find typical cell-phone monthly plans sufficient.

1 Vintage

Vintage is a cheese and wine aficionado's dream, with the menu a veritable telephone directory of all things cheese and grape. Wines range from the most respectable plonk to a dazzling array of costly vintages, burgundies and champagnes but, despite the exclusive list, this feels more like a friendly local than a stuffy wine bar. Don't overlook the food, there are some fantastic cheese and cold meat platters that come with fresh bread. Vintage is a small space, so reservations and smoke-free dining are not an option, and you may need to arrive early or very late to bag a sofa. Pyramids, 04 324 4100

2 Oscar's Vine Society

The most unlikely location for a cosy wine and cheese hideaway, the Crowne Plaza on Sheikh Zayed Road is home to Oscar's - where wine cask tables and dim lighting set the mood. Daily wine specials offer a good excuse to try something new, while dining offers are great value for hearty French dishes. The friendly bar tenders and the cheese master will be happy to explain the selections. 04 331 1111

3 Oeno Wine Bar

Fine wines and excellent service set Oeno apart. The decor is stylish and the wine wall, complete with shelf ladder, adds a sense of decadence. The food is served tapas-style, with charcuterie and antipasti options accompanying a selection of dozens of cheeses. Don't be put off when the platter arrives bearing minute portions of cheese; these tiny, pungent pieces of heaven go a long way. Tuesday nights bring three free glasses of sparkling wine for ladies from 6-9pm. The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi, 04 399 4141

4 The Agency

If overwhelmed by the 30-plus page wine menu, try one of the 'wine flights', a selection of four different wines, to get yourself in the swing. The cafe facade and the dark wood and brick interior could be from any great wine-producing region, as could the tasty tapas-style snacks. A great place to warm up for a big night out, it can get a little too cosy. There's another branch at Madinat Jumeirah (04 366 6730). Boulevard at Emirates Towers, 04 319 8088

5 Cin Cin Modish furnishings, warehouse-high wine shelves, and walls fashioned like falling water create a backdrop as bling as Beyonce in a diamond-encrusted catsuit. It's easy to get carried away ordering fine wines, from the selection of over 400 vintages, plus imaginative cocktails and caviar, but brace yourself for the bar bill - this is expense account territory. Fairmont Dubai, 04 311 8559

6 Vantage

We have high hopes for this brand new wine bar at the Pullman Dubai. Set on the fifth floor, the sweeping terrace is a draw in itself. Inside, the dramatic purple, black and white interior and plush couches create an elegant setting. Can't decide what to quaff? Purchase a rechargeable Vantage Wine Card to sample this month's selection of wines from the snazzy Enomatic wine machine. Tastings costs from just dhs5 allowing you to sample some excellent grapes without breaking the bank. Pair with specially selected tapas and enjoy the view. Pullman Dubai Mall Of The Emirates, 04 377 2000

7The Cellar

OK, it's a restaurant, not a wine bar, but it has a great wine list, and as the bar area is completely separate to the dining room, we just had to include it. Choose from a range of new and old world grapes and relax in the intimate, but laidback, curtained bar or outside on the terrace. If you're feeling peckish, look out for the regular wine and dine specials, such as the Wine Bazaar and Chef's Table, in which The Cellar's excellent cuisine is paired with complementing wines. Dangerous waters? Facebook's link to online games has some charging the social network has waded into antitrust territory.(News)

Byline: Jia Lynn Yang Washington Post

WASHINGTON The tech industry has become dominated these days by a few goliaths who have smoked their competitors.

Google runs the go-to-search engine, Apple is way ahead in the race to deliver movies and music to consumers, and Facebook has built the most popular social network by far in this country. With U.S. antitrust enforcers already examining Google and Apple for violations, some say that Facebook should also go under the microscope.

The nonpartisan group Consumer Watchdog sent a complaint to the Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday, claiming the company is abusing its power as a popular site for online games by requiring all game developers to exclusively use Facebooks virtual currency and then taking a 30 percent cut with every transaction.

"Its a digital shakedown," said Jeff Chester, executive director of the Center for Digital Democracy, who also has raised concerns with the FTC. Facebook is "using its powerful control of . . . a closed system that arguably rivals Google in power across the world to force everyone to use only its digital currency."

Games played between friends on Facebook have become enormously popular on the site, spawning a mini-economy of users who buy virtual goods with real money.

One popular game called FarmVille, for instance, invites users to buy supplies to build farms and grow crops. Business in this area is booming. The entire market for virtual goods in this country is expected to reach $2.1 billion over all in 2011, up 40 percent from last year, according to Inside Network, a research firm.

Developers of these games and Facebook have a symbiotic relationship. Part of Facebooks explosive popularity resulted from the sites willingness to allow outside developers to create games and other applications to work on Facebooks platform. When Facebook offers games that become hits, users are more likely to stay on the site longer, allowing Facebook to sell more ads.

Most of the games are free, but users pay for virtual items used in the games in a variety of ways, including third-party payment sites such as PayPal or by purchasing them directly from the games developers.

But starting July 1, all games on Facebooks site will have to use Facebook Credits, the sites virtual currency. Because each purchase will include a 30 percent fee, critics say this added cost is essentially a tax on developers who rely on Facebook for a vast majority of their business.

"This is a serious thing. If they can dictate terms using anti-competitive tactics, its all going to mean that consumers pay more for their games

and that innovation in this whole space will be absolutely stifled," said John Simpson, a consumer advocate at Consumer Watchdog.

Facebook, which declined to comment for this story, surpassed Google as the most-visited site in this country last year. And the company is branching out. Earlier this year, it inked a deal with Warner Bros. to rent out movies, paid for by users with Facebook Credits.

This expansion of the Facebook ecosystem, to some experts, resembles the growth of other tech giants such as Google and and Apple.

Google has expanded its brand onto mobile phones, maps and e-mail to the point where many users rely on Googles products for much of their Internet use. Apple, too, has found success creating a self-contained system that melds its devices with iTunes and its applications store. Like Facebook, Apple collects a 30 percent fee from publishers that sell content on an iPad or iPhone app.

"I think in all of these cases whether it be Apple, Google, now Facebook

the government is going to be keeping a close eye on all these companies as long as they are ubiquitous, dominant and getting into vertical [other] areas," said Rebecca Arbogast, an analyst with Stifel, Nicolaus.

But, Arbogast added, its not clear yet whether any of these inquiries will result in formal antitrust charges. The companies are all complex and changing constantly.

In a sense, the antitrust concerns about these companies are all descendants of the governments blockbuster case against Microsoft in the 1990s. In that case, officials accused Microsoft of leveraging its dominant Windows operating to funnel users to its browser, too. Likewise, critics of Facebook say the company can shepherd users to its own currency because of its dominance as the most popular social network.

"We call them winner-take-all businesses," said Ben Edelman, an assistant professor at Harvard Business School. "The benefits to participating in a competing social network are slim to none. You might be the only one there."

Research Findings from J.S. Leu et al Update Understanding of Communications.

According to recent research published in the journal Iet Communications, "Under the beyond third-generation (B3G) vision, cellular operators (like Vodafone, T-mobile) construct a complementary environment - public wireless local area network (PWLAN) to compensate for the limited data access service to become cellular/PWLAN operators. In addition, PWLAN service coverage can be improved by bringing together various types of PWLAN operators, including PWLAN operators, cellular/PWLAN operators and PWLAN roaming brokers under PWLAN roaming agreements."

"To build a better PWLAN access service, the group formed by heterogeneous PWLAN roaming partners is markedly growing. In such a cooperative service, the user authentication process plays a foremost role for users and involves many back-and-forth authentication message transmissions among the PWLAN partners. Some factors causing the authentication delay are hard to be further improved, such as the authentication network condition since the networks are owned by many PWLAN partners and scattered in the Internet. If the Internet protocol (IP) lookup time for the authentication server can be shortened, the efficiency for the IP-based authentication process can be made. In this article, an improved mechanism for reducing the IP lookup latency prior to conveying authentication messages is presented," wrote J.S. Leu and colleagues.

The researchers concluded: "With theoretical analyses and simulation results, the proposed scheme can improve the authentication process in a cooperative B3G network."

Leu and colleagues published their study in Iet Communications (Improving the Internet protocol-based authentication process in a cooperative beyond third-generation network. Iet Communications, 2011;5(5):667-675).

Vishay Announces Expected Goodwill Impairment Charge.

MALVERN, Pa. -- Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE:VSH) announced today that it expects financial results for the second quarter of 2008 to be impacted by a material goodwill impairment charge. The amount of the charge is still being determined, but is anticipated to be a substantial portion of the goodwill recorded on its balance sheet.

While the goodwill impairment charge will reduce reported results under U.S. generally accepted accounting principles ("GAAP"), it will be non-cash in nature and will not affect Vishay's liquidity, cash flows from operating activities, or debt covenants, or have any impact on future operations.

Under U.S. GAAP, goodwill is not amortized, but rather is tested for impairment at least annually. These tests for impairment are performed more frequently if there are triggering events. In light of a sustained decline in market capitalization for Vishay and its peer group companies, and other factors, Vishay determined that an interim impairment test was necessary as of the end of the second fiscal quarter.

Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 142, Goodwill and Other Intangible Assets, prescribes a two-step method for determining goodwill impairment. Since the adoption of SFAS No. 142, Vishay has utilized a comparable companies market multiple approach to determine the fair value of its reporting units. Accordingly, changes in the market capitalization of Vishay's peer group companies have a material impact on the goodwill impairment test.

Dr. Felix Zandman, Vishay's Executive Chairman of the Board and Dr. Gerald Paul, Vishay's Chief Executive Officer, stated, "Despite challenging economic conditions, we remain optimistic about the success of our businesses."

Vishay will report its financial results for the second quarter of 2008 on July 29, 2008.

Vishay Intertechnology, Inc., a Fortune 1,000 Company listed on the NYSE (VSH), is one of the world's largest manufacturers of discrete semiconductors (diodes, rectifiers, transistors, and optoelectronics and selected ICs) and passive electronic components (resistors, capacitors, inductors, sensors, and transducers). These components are used in virtually all types of electronic devices and equipment, in the industrial, computing, automotive, consumer, telecommunications, military, aerospace, and medical markets. Its product innovations, successful acquisition strategy, and ability to provide "one-stop shop" service have made Vishay a global industry leader. Lok Technology Introduces New Network Admission, Reconnaissance and Control Software "narc" To Manage Education Networks with Mac OS X Server.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Lok Technology, Inc. today introduced "narc," a Mac OS X Server-based Universal application designed to manage and control IP networks. narc is designed for the education market and provides a complete Apple solution for deploying, controlling, and managing education networks of all kinds.

"Apple is the most innovative technology company in teaching and learning, which makes our narc software a great enhancement to their 1 to 1 initiatives," said Simon Lok, Founder and CTO of Lok Technology, Inc. "narc provides Internet access to students, faculty and guests, letting them roam freely throughout campus along with their user preferences, authorization profiles, and access controls. Also, the new Intel Quad Xeon 64-bit Xserve is the perfect high-performance platform for supporting demanding networks, backed by the stability and robustness of an industrial-strength Unix operating system."

"Mac OS X Server and Xserve deliver a blend of functionality, power and value that provides a secure, rock solid platform for Lok Technology's narc," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "This seamless software and hardware combination will help Apple's education customers effectively and efficiently manage their networks."

Currently, when institutions deploy computers, they also purchase full racks of traditional (disparate) networking appliances to provide controlled Internet and Intranet access to students, faculty and guests. Typically these each provide only a single function such as traffic shaping, authentication, captive portal, content filtering, intrusion detection, routing and security. A serious problem with this setup is the lack of data sharing standards for networking devices, making it difficult for them to function well together.

Lok Technology's narc, Mac OS X Server and Xserve solve this. Installed as a trunk interceptor between two network segments (e.g., at the crossover between a wired and a wireless network, the demarc between the Education LAN and the telco WAN, etc.), the Xserve can deliver a broad spectrum of fully integrated network capabilities that address all of the unique needs of the Education network. This includes managing network traffic, authentication, authorization, accounting, auditing and instrumentation. This solution is inherently simpler, improving manageability, maintainability, and monitor-ability, while resulting in a reduction of capital and operational expenses.

In short, narc redefines how Education networking is done.

Pricing & Availability

narc is available as a software package designed to run on Mac OS X Server and will be available this summer through Lok Technology, Inc. (www.lok.com http://www.loktechnologylok.com). The narc software package retails for $14,950. This configuration supports approximately 1,000 simultaneous users connecting through a high-speed WAN uplink. Full system requirements and more information on narc can be found at www.lok.com/apple.
