Lok Technology Introduces New Network Admission, Reconnaissance and Control Software "narc" To Manage Education Networks with Mac OS X Server.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Lok Technology, Inc. today introduced "narc," a Mac OS X Server-based Universal application designed to manage and control IP networks. narc is designed for the education market and provides a complete Apple solution for deploying, controlling, and managing education networks of all kinds.

"Apple is the most innovative technology company in teaching and learning, which makes our narc software a great enhancement to their 1 to 1 initiatives," said Simon Lok, Founder and CTO of Lok Technology, Inc. "narc provides Internet access to students, faculty and guests, letting them roam freely throughout campus along with their user preferences, authorization profiles, and access controls. Also, the new Intel Quad Xeon 64-bit Xserve is the perfect high-performance platform for supporting demanding networks, backed by the stability and robustness of an industrial-strength Unix operating system."

"Mac OS X Server and Xserve deliver a blend of functionality, power and value that provides a secure, rock solid platform for Lok Technology's narc," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "This seamless software and hardware combination will help Apple's education customers effectively and efficiently manage their networks."

Currently, when institutions deploy computers, they also purchase full racks of traditional (disparate) networking appliances to provide controlled Internet and Intranet access to students, faculty and guests. Typically these each provide only a single function such as traffic shaping, authentication, captive portal, content filtering, intrusion detection, routing and security. A serious problem with this setup is the lack of data sharing standards for networking devices, making it difficult for them to function well together.

Lok Technology's narc, Mac OS X Server and Xserve solve this. Installed as a trunk interceptor between two network segments (e.g., at the crossover between a wired and a wireless network, the demarc between the Education LAN and the telco WAN, etc.), the Xserve can deliver a broad spectrum of fully integrated network capabilities that address all of the unique needs of the Education network. This includes managing network traffic, authentication, authorization, accounting, auditing and instrumentation. This solution is inherently simpler, improving manageability, maintainability, and monitor-ability, while resulting in a reduction of capital and operational expenses.

In short, narc redefines how Education networking is done.

Pricing & Availability

narc is available as a software package designed to run on Mac OS X Server and will be available this summer through Lok Technology, Inc. (www.lok.com http://www.loktechnologylok.com). The narc software package retails for $14,950. This configuration supports approximately 1,000 simultaneous users connecting through a high-speed WAN uplink. Full system requirements and more information on narc can be found at www.lok.com/apple.
